Teachers for Better Schools (TBS) is the political action arm
of CEA. This is a separate political action committee that advocates
for the benefit of teachers in the political arena. TBS screens
candidates for various offices and makes recommendations to the TBS
Board. The TBS Board sends its approved list to the CEA Board of
Governors. After action by the CEA Board of Governors, the
recommendations are then forwarded to the CEA Legislative Assembly for
final approval.
For CEA to make an endorsement, it
must be made by this assembly of CEA’s elected faculty representatives.
Our process of endorsement is highly respected, and our support is
strongly desired by all candidates. In addition to candidate screening,
TBS raises money for political candidates, levy and bond campaigns and
other ballot
issues affecting Columbus teachers and the school
community. CEA does not use any dues money to promote individual
candidates or issues.
At
the beginning of the 2003-2004 school year, only 282 CPS educators were
currently supporting this effort through payroll deduction. We need the
support of all Columbus teachers.
