CEA Stands in Solidarity With SWEA

200px-solidarnosc.pngThe Columbus Education Association Board of Governors unanimously passed a resolution at their most recent meeting, expressing strong support of the struggle of members of the South Western Education Association (SWEA) members to obtain a fair contract from their Board of Education for their members.

RESOLUTION

Expressing support of the South Western Education Association negotiations

WHEREAS the 1400 teachers in the South Western City School District are members of the South Western Education Association, the Ohio Education Association and the National Education Association;

WHEREAS the members of the South Western Education Association are concerned about attracting and keeping highly qualified teachers in the classrooms for the benefit of the over 20,000 students of the South Western City School District;

WHEREAS the members of the South Western Education Association have upheld the principle of good-faith bargaining in their dealings with the South Western City Schools Board of Education since the beginning of negotiations in April, 2007;

WHEREAS the members of the South Western Education Association have worked since the expiration of their previous contract in June of 2007; and

WHEREAS the entire membership of the South Western Education Association has been working to the rule during the month of December, 2007: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the Columbus Education Association Board of Governors—

(1)recognizes that the members of the South Western Education Association’s right to negotiate a contract and conduct a job action is a protected activity under the Ohio Revised Code; and

(2)expresses support for the solidarity South Western Education Association teachers and their collective efforts to improve the retention of quality teachers by the South Western City School District and thus improve the classroom experience for all students in the aforementioned school district.
